I am just going to say that I am a fan of Bond, or at least modern Bond. I love it. And that is why I absolutely loved this movie. This was the bow; tied to the present that was Daniel Craig’s James Bond run. This gave a whole new perspective on the previous three Bond movies – they were all connected by one man, Blofeld. This gave fans of the modern Bond films a treat if they were a dedicated viewer (and managed to sit through Quantum of Solace at least twice). It gave us a lot of Easter Eggs and made the events of the films feel more connected than ever before. My overall enjoyment of this film, as someone who really appreciates properly setting up the plot while producing good storytelling, made me enfuriated to hear the immediate responses of two people that I watched the film with was they that thought Skyfall was better. Which is okay and that is a fair opinion, however when you watch a new film that shouldn’t be your immediate response, especially when it has so much to offer.
One of the great things about this film is that it was tied to every other Daniel Craig bond film, yet it didn’t ruin their stories. One of the best things about this tie up was the reccuring characters. We had; the new M, Q and Miss Eve Moneypenny, and of course, the man himself, James Bond. Plus, we also got to see the return of Mr White; the only decent villain to appear in Quantum. That was nice as it was even more of a tie to the previous three movies. I would have to say that a particularly loved Q in this movie. I thought he was great in Skyfall, however he didn’t get enough screen time. Whereas, here, he got the time that he deserved and served as a great addition to the film. I love his character and what he does to the plot. However I would’ve loved a line from him about how much he hates flying, just for continuity purposes. I also liked how this new M was different to the old one, she was more of a desk type but managed to handle everything in that sense. Whereas the new M handled things much more personally and with action. I really liked that sense, as it showed a difference in the two characters. My only problem was Eve. I thought that she was a little underused later on in the movie, however I still love her character.
As for new characters: Mr White’s daughter; Maddeline, was a nice a addition. She wasn’t like a lot of other Bond girls and definately reminded me of Vesper in that sense. She was a great character and I do think that she was fitting for Bond’s leave of MI6. C was an interesting character, I love Andrew Scott because of Sherlock, therefore I have to say that I was intrigued in the character. And he was a character that you have to love to hate, at the end of the film. However, nearer the start, you can’t be completely sure if of him.
The villains were all very good. I suppose you can count Mr White as a villain. And it was so interesting to see him in this old, broken state and it was actually quite sad. I can not remember this guy’s name but the big guy who seemed to take bullets like it was the dart of a nerf gun. What a badass. He was definately the large physical threat of the film and he really did challenge Bond and made you worry for him. Then we have, of course, Blofeld. I really enjoyed him as the villain of the movie, I liked the kind of villain that he was; more of a sit down, less action, yet very smart villain. I loved the actor’s performance and yeah I found that he was a pretty intense villain.
The plot of the film was interesting throughout, like I said, it incorporated the previous films and rounded them off well. It had a casual string of action throughout and felt very much like a Bond movie. Bond was on form as his usual; badass, womanising, cold self. He was definately very great in this movie, and there was an amazing blend of everything that makes a great Bond movie. I would defiantly advice watching this movie if you’re a Bond fan, and if not then it is still an interesting thriller and this movie will, hopefully make you want to watch the three previous, at least.
